What is harm reduction?
Harm Reduction is a social strategy used to minimize the harm to individuals and society resulting from behaviors that cannot be completely avoided or prevented.
Harm reduction is a care approach that respects people's freedom.
And here, we’re going to talk about tobacco.
Tobacco use has severe impacts on health, the economy, the environment, and society.
Its use leads to over 8 million deaths every year.
Over 80% of the world’s 1.1 billion smokers live in low- and middle-income countries.
Minority groups and those in social vulnerability are the most affected.
We know that nicotine is not one of the substances linked to the development of cancer — it’s the smoke that causes it.
This fact is supported and confirmed by studies from institutions such as the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer, the UK Royal College of Physicians, and the US Surgeon General.
So, what are the less harmful options for nicotine consumption?
Vapes or pods are electronic devices where nicotine is delivered through vapor and pose only 5% of the risk of a conventional cigarette.
Nicotine gums, lozenges, and patches release nicotine when they come into contact with the mucosa or the skin.
There are products like SNUS and heated tobacco, but they are not available in Brazil.
